How to Use This Site
How this site is arranged, and the controls it gives you over how it reads.
This site is laid out as an application rather than as a set of linked documents. The bar across the top is the whole navigation: every item on it either goes somewhere or performs the action it names, and nothing on it is decorative. If you are looking for something and would rather not hunt through the menus, Help ▸ Search Help takes a plain description of what you want and offers the command that does it.
The menus
- Fluvial
- The wordmark, and the firm's own menu — who the firm is, how an engagement runs, and how to reach it. On a phone the wordmark is the way home instead, and these sit at the top of the drawer.
- File
- Acts on the page in front of you. Printing, emailing it, and opening it in a new window.
- Edit
- Copying, in the forms a technical reader wants it: the selection, the link, and the page as Markdown. Find on Page searches this page and highlights what it finds.
- View
- How the site looks and reads. Dark or light, four reading sizes, and a way to hide the bar entirely — those two sit together, because both govern how much interface stands between you and the page. Full screen is below the rule, since it changes the window rather than the page.
- Practice
- What the firm does and where. Services and Sectors carries the nine services, the five sectors they are delivered into, and the field and subsurface methods behind them. The Project Portfolio is the completed work. The Capability Statement is the two-page summary a procurement group asks for by name; it opens as a PDF in a new tab, baked from the page of the same name so the two cannot say different things.
- Library
- What the work is read against. References, the Lexicon of practice terms, and the Open Data portal.
- FluviOS
- The firm's analytical engine, the Watershed Explorer, and the client gateway.
Reading controls
- Two size controls, and they multiply
- The A A A A cluster at the right of the bar scales the whole interface, bar and page together. View ▸ Text Size is a finer adjustment on top of it, on reading pages. Between them the body text runs from about 14 px to 40 px.
- Dark and light
- View ▸ as Dark and as Light. The choice is remembered in this browser.
- Hide the bar
- View ▸ Hide the Bar, or the backslash key. A tab appears at the top edge to bring it back.
Keyboard
- Find on this page
- Command-F, or Control-F on Windows. Enter steps to the next match, Shift-Enter to the previous, Escape closes.
- Search help
- Command-slash, or Control-slash.
- Command-P, or Control-P.
- Close what is open
- Escape closes a menu, the find bar, the help search, or the navigation drawer.
- Hide and show the bar
- The backslash key.
On a phone
The bar collapses into a drawer when it no longer fits, which depends on the window and on the interface scale rather than on a fixed screen size. Everything on the bar is in the drawer, including the theme, the reading size, and the interface scale.
