About This Site

How it is built

Source: Every page is written in Markdown and rendered to HTML by a build script that uses the Python standard library and nothing else. The Markdown is the source of truth; the HTML is generated output and is never edited directly.
Delivered as: Plain HTML with one stylesheet and one script. There is no framework, no build pipeline beyond that script, and no server-side code — the site is a directory of files.
Nothing is loaded from anywhere else: No content delivery network, no hosted fonts, no embedded video, no third-party widgets. The typeface is served from this domain. A page that reaches your browser has made requests to this site and to no one else.
Works offline: Because the pages carry no external dependency, the site runs from a local copy opened as a file, menus and all.

No analytics: The site runs no analytics, no tracking pixels, no fingerprinting, and no advertising. No profile of a visit is built, here or anywhere else.
No cookies: The site sets none.
Four values, in your browser only: Your theme, your reading size, your interface scale, and whether you have hidden the menu bar are stored in your own browser's local storage so the site looks the same on your next visit. They stay on your device and are never transmitted. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.
Server logs: The web host records ordinary request logs, as every web server does. The firm does not analyse them to build a picture of individual visitors.
The enquiry form: Composes a message in your own mail client. It has no backend and submits nothing to this site.

Two size controls: The interface scale grows the whole interface, bar and page together; the reading size is a finer adjustment on top of it. Between them the body text runs from about 14 to 40 pixels, and the controls are on the bar rather than buried in a settings page.
Light and dark: Both are complete palettes rather than an inversion, and the choice persists.
Motion: The site is nearly static. The one animation it offers respects the operating system's reduced-motion setting.
Structure and keyboard: Pages use semantic headings and lists, menus carry the roles and labels assistive technology reads, and every menu, the find bar, and the help search can be driven from the keyboard.

Practice terms: Quoted from the standard, statute, or guidance document that issued each definition, with the source cited on the entry. The firm curates the Lexicon; it does not write its definitions.
English dictionary: Open English WordNet 2024, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Sense content is reproduced without modification, and the licence travels with the data on this server.
Open data: Every dataset in the Open Data portal is used under its custodian's own terms, which are read at the source rather than restated here. Attribution is carried wherever data is displayed or redistributed.
Typeface: Carlito, under the SIL Open Font License, chosen because it is metrically compatible with Calibri, the firm's document standard, and can be served from this domain rather than fetched from a font host.
